What Flea Prevention in Vancouver is So Important

What-Flea-Prevention-in-Vancouver-is-So-Important

Flea and tick infestations are some of the most common issues among cats and their owners. Unfortunately, many pet parents don’t realize just how many problems these pesky parasites can cause. In addition to being annoying and causing your cat to scratch and lick themselves excessively, they can cause a variety of symptoms and health issues. In most cases, itchy skin is merely the tip of the iceberg.

In this blog post, Jared the Cat Groomer will be sharing a few reasons why flea and tick prevention in Vancouver is so important. Let’s dive in!

Why Preventing You Need to Protect Your Cat From Fleas and Ticks

Both fleas and ticks survive by feasting on their hosts’ blood, and their saliva triggers an allergic reaction in many pets. If your cat is allergic, they could experience dermatitis, infection, itching, abscesses, and more. Severe infestations cause flea anemia, as well.

These external parasites also carry several diseases that are transmissible to cats, including:

  • Lyme Disease
  • Anaplasmosis
  • Bartonellosis
  • Babesiosis
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Fleas can also transmit tapeworm to cats if swallowed during self-grooming.

In addition to the health risks, these parasites are extremely difficult to get rid of. Fleas infestations are especially hard to control due to their breeding cycle. Females lay approximately 40 eggs daily. And once those eggs hatch and reach maturity, the new females start laying eggs, too. Getting rid of an infestation requires killing the fleas during all lifecycles, which can take several months.

Flea and Tick Prevention in Vancouver

If your feline friend isn’t already on an effective medication, we encourage you to seek flea and tick prevention in Vancouver from your veterinarian. Your vet will help you choose a product that’s safe for cats and instruct you on how to use it.

Fleas detected during grooming services with Jared the Cat Groomer are typically removed using Capstar at an additional cost. This product kills live fleas within 20 minutes, but it is not an effective means of preventing infestations. We may be unable to groom your cat if they are suffering from a severe infestation.

If your feline friend needs some TLC, let Jared the Cat Groomer help. Call now to schedule an appointment.
